PT Adaro Indonesia operates under a Coal Cooperation Agreement with the Government of Indonesia which gives it the right to mine coal within its Agreement Area in the Tanjung district of South Kalimantan Province until the year 2022 with Rights to extend by mutual agreement are available. There are three deposits within the Agreement Area which contain total coal resources of approximately 3.0 billion tones of open cut coal characterized by extremely thick seams of up to 50 meters with relatively low overburden. The coal is exceptionally clean with 0.1% sulphur, 1.5% ash and low nitrogen and has been trademarked internationally as “envirocoal”. Production commenced in 1991 and has increased steadily since that time with sales to both export and domestic markets reaching 34 million tonnes in 2006 making Adaro Indonesia’s largest coal producer from a single mine.
